The Lifestyle!
One ex-New Yorker's take on the Central Florida Lifestyle by Barbara Middleton, Broker-Associate B ecause Central Florida is the vacation capital of the world, most people know what it is like to vacation here. Living here is not much different. When you first move to the Orlando area, you'll find an up and a down side. The upside is reveling in the sun and fun of the area. Light, casual clothes, casual fun, outdoor activities, sports all year long. The downside is, it's hard to get down to business when you are in a vacation environment. So much for the downside. We are all individuals, and have our personal preferences about what makes a great lifestyle. For me, never having to clean ice from my windshield is high on my list of the perfect lifestyle. Along with that goes never feeling bone chilling cold again, or waiting impatiently for the landscape to turn from grey to green. Looking out my window and seeing green all year long, and sun most of the time is my idea of near-perfect. Picking oranges and grapefruits out of trees in December is serendipity. The clean and open feel of the area, with emphasis on outdoor living is what keeps you feeling good about living here year after year. Because we are in the vacationer paradise, we have ample opportunities for entertainment and amusement. Parks, museums, stadiums, great night life, they're here. Sports year round, beaches, less than one hour away with no traffic jams, all that's here and more. No shortage of good restaurants, planned activities, great craft shows, musical events, opera, ballet, theater, and the list goes on. It's the sun and fun lifestyle. Your home and life merge with the outdoors. Meals can occur around the pool, and are casual and fun. The pool and/or patio are located in a screened room, so there's no need to worry about mosquitos and other flying insects. The patio is usually in the rear of your home. Your home may look out on the pool, or lake, golf course or woods as the case may be. Indoors merge with the outdoors. Just in case it matters to you, there are few basements in Florida. What's more, we don't seem to miss them. Houses are made of concrete block or frame. Stucco exteriors are a favorite, but many homes use brick and stone for their exterior, or combinations. The architecture is diverse. There are many lovely European style homes, as well as Georgian, New England, Key West, contemporary and traditional. The overall lifestyle is casual and informal. People seem to be gentler here, friendlier. The sun, which is shining most of the time, gets the credit for the gentler, friendlier atmosphere. It also gets credit for the summer heat. If you don't tolerate heat well, summertime in Florida is tough. Some people opt to go to cooler climates during the months of July, August and September. But, if you're planning to be here all-year round, not to worry there is central air conditioning, a way of life here. You'll definitely use your air-conditioning four to five months of the year. You will use central heating to get the chill off the house in the early mornings and evenings during December, January and February. There is considerable building going on and many homes are less than five years old and more energy efficient than their predecessors, so your utility bill will be reasonable. Some of the other pluses to living in Central Florida are a lower cost of living index; with taxes that are lower than most Metropolitan areas and no state income tax. Housing is affordable also, and there are excellent medical facilities here and plenty of them. After all is said, the Central Florida Lifestyle is relaxed, casual and comfortable. It's ideal for outdoor people, or people who crave more outdoors in their lives. It provides a mix of work and play that enlivens the spirit, and puts a lot of light and warmth into your living. |
